In Atlanta, we're promoting an open mic by request from the Atlanta Jewish Music Festival. I got the following email from an Atlanta musician.
My question is, 'Should we promote all open mics, or just the ones that seem to meet today's definition of 'politically correct?' Your opinion is important to me.
Dave,
I find the first part of this email offensive. In this day and age, we should all work to be a part of the “global village.” We should not segregate in any way either racial, ethnic, or religious. While I agree that each person should celebrate their heritage, the fact that the Atlanta Jewish Music Festival is open only to Jews is inherently bias. The “local” music scene here in Atlanta is comprised of many different races, religions, ethnicities etc. In fact, the black music scene is probably most prevalent and more closely represents what is “local.” I am not being anti-Semitic at all, in fact I find the singularly “black” awards shows offensive as well. What if we had the “white peoples” choice awards? Or how about the Atlanta Christian Music Festival? There would be pandemonium. I hope you see my point even if you disagree. I am a professional musician (I make a living playing music) and am not alone in my thinking. Others share my point of view. As such, I would recommend that you not identify the open-mic scene in Atlanta with deliberately segregating groups such as the AJMF. As such, I am opting out of your email blasts and recommending the same to my musician friends. I’m just saying.
