Open Mic U.S.

We need your help!

We're thinking about launching a new OpenMic.US Singer/Songwriter competition.

It will be full of great prizes from our sponsors.

The winner may even get an interview on Acoustic Cafe Radio program and they may have their music put into rotation.

We're working on the details.

We'd like to make sure that this is something that y'all really want.

We've created a short poll.  Please click on 'OpenMic.US Singer/Songwriter Competition' in the middle column, at the top of the main page.

And, you may leave your comments here also.

Thank you!

...kool..I'm in
Dave, love what you have started with this open mic thing, it really would be a shame if you guys start having competions. i really love when people or " judges" , judge people on performance , song quality, etc..... , i mean really, man! how can you say " this musicain was better than that musicain " . i'm still waiting for someone to explain that one. hell you can charge a cover charge at the door , and have a shootout! every month!.......we all know the place. open mic is about people getting together, playing music, and enjoying that great gift in life , called music.
Hey JC -

I agree that the best open mics are not 'competitions.'

What we're talking about doing here is to run a separate competition for those who like such things.

Knowing that music is such a personal thing, it is very difficult to judge. It is very important to set fourth the judging criteria in advance, thus providing a basis for comparing songs.

Your input is much appreciated!
Under stood what your saying. I understood it that would be a seperate catogory.here. I have Played Many Open Mikes here in Detroit, The Person running it got paid the rest were there to play

Instead of a competition that would fly in the face of the Open Mic idea (in my humble opinion) how about simply showcasing one musician a week? There could be some sort of sign up and each week a different musician could be heard by everyone else. Maybe have a spot for feedback and constructive criticism. Just a thought. (This might drive more people to your website. I know if I were to be showcased on a website I would tell EVERYONE to go read about it and listen to my song)
Remind me to showcase you sometime!
...what's the big deal ? so once or twice a year OPEN MIC US has a singer/songwriter contest ? ...there's still essentially 50 weeks out of the year to sing at any given open mic..times 7 days a week ...
...singing at most open mics involves myself and the other performers to sing only covers and because I don't play instruments anymore...only on occasion do I get to sing one of my own songs accapella for the crowd...I would rather sing my own at open mic..but not until I get my song scored and accompanied...but that's my prob
...back to the subject
..for many the contest will be a huge incentive to finish a half dozen songs and a opportunity to have them heard..
Not everyone here intends their singing or songwriting to be always just a hobby...including me

Competition keeps people practicing and compells them to be creative...doesn't matter who wins...with music it's all good
When it comes to judging anyone..let the crowd do it

And who cares if someone profits from one or two small music events?.....that's the way of the world...
Unless you want to host...let others do their job
Set parameters ...produce a quality event...any fees paid for this or any future event would be paid by someone who reached into his own pocket in the 1st place...once this starts ..no whining

later....~logan
I do Host around the Detroit area and it's more than a couple bucks. Sometimes you give and some you get.All Open Mikes are a compatation , weather to get feed back or to shine. The only person winning is you, acting so smart. I was surrounded by anti compatation at the time. I'm not worthyI'm not worthyI'm not worthyI'm not worthyI'm not worthyI'm not worthy

Make the compatation quarterly and give a really good prize. This place is great and makes a bundle on advertisement. They should put me on their committee.
I personally think that "letting the audience do it" for judging is not a great idea. I've been in these situations before and people bring all of their friends....if it's based on loudest audience applause, even if the singing totally stinks, and the person wins anyway, that's not really winning in my opinion. Competition is OK as long as people are judged using the right criteria---musicality, stage presence, tone, etc. by people who actually know what they're doing in the music business. "let the crowd do it" is not best practice for showcasing talent in my opinion!! Just my two cents.
..good points Nicci...your points brought back the same memories...I did speak to soon on that subject...but who decides on who the judges are...I would think you would have to offer payment for most industy people to even consider judging this competition..
Maybe a record label if properly approached would get involved in the juding with the hopes of new talent or a marketable song...just a thought
I currently am doing a competition and it is very well run with the exception of the audience factor. They do two rounds; the first round is judged by people who are veteran players of bands around the Indianapolis area ( where I'm from) and the event is hosted by their agent/booking manager. They choose four finalists...it is basically karaoke with a live band...the live band people are again veteran players from this same entertainment agency. After the four finalists are chosen by the judges, the finalists do a sceond song...after the second song the audience cheers for their "favorite"....many times I have been chosen by the judges in the music business for the first round only not to be chosen in the second round ( based on loudest audience applause)....it's kind of silly because most of my "friends" don't go out to clubs in the middle of the week to cheer me on in stuff like this...they have to get up and go to work the next day. The people who win tend to bring all of their friends.....kind of stinks. Oh well. It does feel good to get chosen by people who know what they're doing....guess I need to work on a fan base, eh?? Most of the people who win or are finalists do get gigs with working bands in the Indy area since the agency is a good networking resource. I joined a band from it even though I haven't technically "won" it yet! So I guess it worked out for me....just once though I'd like to technically "win" the darn thing!
