Open Mic U.S.

What should every new performer know about performing at an open mic?

There are first time open mic musicians all over, all the time. As yourself knowing about and being experienced with open mics, what should every musician know about preforming at an open mic? Any good tips, tricks, or pointers?

Try to relax.  Drink something warm to loosen up to pipes, maybe a beer or a mixed drink to relax, if you imbibe.  ANd when it's your turn, focus on the playing your songs just as you practiced them.  Think about the tempo before you start.  Take your time.  DOn't modify them for the moment.  Concentrate.  People are there to hear you play your songs - covers or originals - the YOu play 'em.  Make the moment yours.

If you have an open mic slot in which you can play 2 or 3 songs, you should start with something that is very easy for you and that you know very well. the degree of difficulty is not important. You want to get comfortable on the stool, stage or where ever you are and playing an easy song will allow you to do that. After that you can try something more difficult. Or if it is your first or second time, you may want to just stay with the easy stuff.

One other tip I can give you is, if you have the opportunity before hand, get up on the stage and look around the room. Look at the back and side walls and the people in the space. Get as comfortable as you can being up there on the stage. If you can't do that, then just before you perform, take a 1/2 minute to look around and get comfortable with the space.
